2014 Toyota Corolla

Unsurprisingly, it will pull cues from its big brother, the new-for-2012 Camry. The headlights seem to have the same angular shape as the Camry’s, but the upper and lower grilles look to be cribbed from the 2013 Avalon. Circular fog lamps boast surrounds similar to those on the Camry and Avalon, but appear here in black plastic instead of chrome-clad plastic trim. Around back, the 2014 Corolla is all Camry.

From what we can see, the taillights have the same boomerang shape and clear lenses for both turn signals and reverse lights. The camouflage obscures the trunk’s actual shape, so we can’t yet tell if it the Corolla’s hind quarters will be slab-sided like the Camry, or include a sharp character line like the Avalon. The next Corolla may be moving a bit upmarket the car seen here has goodies such as projector-beam headlights and plenty of chrome trim around the windows.

A six-speed manual will most likely replace the five-speed manual currently offered, but what may replace the ancient four-speed automatic is anyone’s guess. Our bet is on the same six-speed automatic seen elsewhere in Toyota’s lineup. The 2014 Corolla will make its debut sometime next year, with production supposedly starting in the second quarter at Toyota’s plants in Blue Springs, Mississippi, and Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.

2014 Toyota Furia

The Furia's wheelbase is 4 inches longer than that of the current Corolla and the Furia is 2 inches longer overall. Pushing the wheels to the corners typically has advantages in dynamic handling and interior room but tends to reduce trunk space. Also, the Furia is wider but the outgoing Corolla is taller. In a press release, Toyota calls the Furia's styling language "iconic dynamism which uses pure and simple surface elements to create a confident, decisive and recognizable appearance appealing to more youthful consumers."

How close is the Furia to the production Corolla? Toyota insiders said there will be few changes. In the press release, photographs show paper license plates that say "Corolla" in large letters, with "Furia Concept" in much smaller type beneath it. But not everything will reach production. For instance, the Furia comes with 19-inch wheels, which clearly won't make the cut when the production model arrives. The standard Corolla comes with a choice of 15- or 16-inch wheels.

Critics have noted that the Corolla is emblematic of Toyota's need to move away from dowdy styling, saying that compared with vibrant compact sedans from Ford, Mazda, Hyundai and Kia, the Corolla is downright dreary. Toyota has previously pitched the Corolla as the Lexus of affordable transportation, but that has left its styling well short of the cutting edge. Now it seems Toyota has determined that younger buyers require more intriguing design.

"The Corolla Furia Concept is an early indicator of where our compact car design may lead in the future," said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division. "It blends a heightened emphasis on dramatic design and modern elements of high technology to generate curb appeal that will surprise a lot of people." The Furia is designed around a theme of "Iconic Dynamism," which uses pure and simple surface elements to create a confident, decisive and recognizable appearance appealing to more youthful consumers.

It features a more provocative, dynamic interpretation of a compact sedan that displays a more stable, athletic stance with 19-inch allow wheels pushed to the vehicle's corners with short overhangs to help emphasize its long wheelbase. The Corolla Furia design includes a swept windshield, with a sloped roofline and pronounced fender flares, to help communicate a sense of motion even when the car is stationary. The aggressively styled front fascia, with a blacked-out grille treatment, helps highlight a pair of sculpted front LED headlamps that combine with the rear composite LED taillight assemblies to add a sense of advanced technology to the Furia's impactful exterior.

2013 Toyota Rav4

Toyota's designers have modernized the looks of the popular on both sides of the Atlantic RAV4, applying familiar styling cues from their more recent models like the Auris hatchback and estate giving the SUV a sharper appearance.The new compact crossover looks like it also features a larger footprint, which if true, should improve passenger and possibly luggage space, while the interior boasts more upscale materials, such as the leather trim on the dashboard of the display vehicle.

We have nothing official yet on the 2013 RAV4's specifications, but it has been rumored for a while now that the North American model may drop the V6 option and follow the example of the rivaling Honda CR-V offering a single four-cylinder engine. In other regions like Europe, the new RAV4 will be available with diesel units as well, possibly sourced from the BMW Group as part of an agreement signed between the two automakers.

Stay tuned for more as the 2013 RAV4 will make its global debut later today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. RAV4 was a two-time comparison-test champ, so you know we liked it, but it had exactly one thrilling characteristic: The totally bitchin’, un-crossover-like gusto provided by the optional V-6. (Seriously. Zero to 60 in 6.4 seconds.) But now that’s gone, as the new, fourth-generation 2013 Toyota RAV4 will amble through suburbia exclusively on four-cylinder power.

The rest of the formula all the sorta boring stuff that made it great carries over, though, with some key additions to bring it up to modern spec. The four-cylinder is again a 2.5-liter unit, this time making 176 hp versus the previous model’s 179. (Torque stays pat at 172 lb-ft.) Both front- and all-wheel-drive models will be offered, the latter gaining the ability to shunt torque fore and aft and a locking mode that forces more power rearward in low-speed, low-traction situations such as when digging through mud or sand.

This time around, the RAV4 gets a six-speed automatic transmission, which replaces a crusty four-speed unit and incorporates an S mode that blips the throttle on downshifts. The swap improves fuel economy by about five to ten percent, to 24/31 for FWD models and 22/29 for all-wheel-drivers, but we think those trading in their old RAV4s will most enjoy the lower levels of engine noise while on the freeway.

The new Vitz features sharper styling than the current generation. The length has been increased by 35 mm, which translates into more room on the inside.
